Recently I've discovered that If you need to record call on your Avaya or Nortel phone you can use open source software Oreka (http://oreka.sourceforge.net/).
They say that it works with wide range of telephony platforms (BroadWorks, Metaswitch, Asterisk, FreeSwitch, OpenSIPS, Avaya, Nortel, Mitel, Siemens, Cisco Call Manager, Cosmocom, NEC, etc...).
So be it.
For sure, to record a call on your PC you will have to run softphone. And if you need to record your deskphone you can just conference in your softphone.
